Your first chiropractic visit: what to expect

Never been to a chiropractor before? Here's how a first appointment at a typical Christchurch clinic runs, so nothing comes as a surprise.

The history

Expect to spend the first stretch of the appointment talking, not being treated. The chiropractor will ask what brought you in, how long it's been going on, what makes it better or worse, and about your general health, work setup and past injuries. If your problem relates to an accident, this is also where the ACC claim gets lodged — the clinic handles the paperwork with you on the spot.

The examination

Next comes a physical assessment: posture, range of motion, and orthopaedic and neurological checks relevant to your complaint. Some clinics have on-site X-ray facilities or will refer you for imaging if they think it's warranted — many patients never need it. The chiropractor should explain what they found in plain language and what they recommend before any treatment happens.

The adjustment

If treatment starts the same day, it usually involves adjustments — quick, targeted movements applied to specific joints. You may hear a popping sound; that's gas releasing from the joint, not bones cracking. Most people find adjustments comfortable, and you can ask for gentler techniques if you're nervous — clinics treating children and older patients use low-force methods routinely.

The plan — and the questions worth asking

Before you leave, you should know three things: what the chiropractor thinks is going on, how many visits they expect it to take, and what it will cost (including any ACC co-payment). Good questions to ask: "How will we know it's working?" and "What can I do between visits?" Wear comfortable clothes, allow 45–60 minutes for the first appointment, and bring any recent imaging or specialist letters you have. Ready to book?
